Inproblembasedlearning(PBL)studentsuse“triggers”fromtheproblemcaseorscenariotodefinetheirownlearningobjectives.Subsequentlytheydoindependent,selfdirectedstudybeforereturningtothegrouptodiscussandrefinetheiracquiredknowledge.Thus,PBLisnotaboutproblemsolvingperse,butratheritusesappropriateproblemstoincreaseknowledgeandunderstanding.Theprocessisclearlydefined,andtheseveralvariationsthatexistallfollowasimilarseriesofsteps.
Grouplearningfacilitatesnotonlytheacquisitionofknowledgebutalsoseveralotherdesirableattributes,suchascommunicationskills,teamwork,problemsolving,independentresponsibilityforlearning,sharinginformation,andrespectforothers.PBLcanthereforebethoughtofasasmallgroupteachingmethodthatcombinestheacquisitionofknowledgewiththedevelopmentofgenericskillsandattitudes.Presentationofclinicalmaterialasthestimulusforlearningenablesstudentstounderstandtherelevanceofunderlyingscientificknowledgeandprinciplesinclinicalpractice.
